Today Walmart announced that it will offer streaming movies to customers directly from the Walmart.com website.
This announcement comes just 2 weeks after Netflix announced a price increase that made some of its streaming movie and DVD rental customers upset.
Eighteen months ago, in February of 2010, Walmart made an announcement that it would acquire video streaming service VUDU for $100 Million. To celebrate the launch of this service, Walmart is allowing customers to vote by way of Facebook (www.facebook.com/walmart ) on a select group of titles. The title that receives the most votes by 5 PM EDT tomorrow, will be available to rent for just 99 cents on Friday, July 29.
Regardless of how this works out, you have to admire the forward thinking of Walmart, given that DVD sales have been declining and streaming is the way of the future.
